Snoring Evaluation
Snoring is common, but frequent loud snoring—especially with witnessed pauses, gasping or sleepiness—can be a warning sign of obstructive sleep apnea.

What causes snoring?
Vibration of upper-airway tissues can be influenced by nasal obstruction, sleep position, alcohol, sedatives, airway anatomy, weight and sleep stage. The sound alone does not establish severity.
Questions that change the next step
- Are there witnessed breathing pauses, choking or gasping?
- Is there excessive daytime sleepiness or drowsy driving?
- Are hypertension, cardiovascular disease or metabolic risk present?
- Is snoring new, rapidly worsening or associated with another symptom?
Treatment may involve addressing contributing factors, PAP when sleep apnea is diagnosed, positional strategies, oral-appliance referral or other individualized care. Avoid unproven anti-snoring products that delay appropriate testing.
