Sleep Apnea Evaluation
Loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, gasping, morning headaches and daytime sleepiness can justify a structured evaluation for obstructive sleep apnea.

What the evaluation covers
The clinician reviews symptoms, sleep schedule, medications, alcohol or sedative exposure, nasal and airway concerns, cardiovascular and metabolic history, driving safety and prior sleep testing. A questionnaire can estimate risk but cannot diagnose sleep apnea.
Symptoms
Snoring, choking, nocturia, unrefreshing sleep, morning headache, impaired concentration and sleepiness.
Risk factors
Body weight, neck or airway anatomy, age, family history, hypertension and certain medical conditions.
Next test
A home test may suit selected uncomplicated adults; other patients require laboratory polysomnography or another evaluation.
Diagnosis should be based on a comprehensive sleep evaluation plus technically adequate testing—not symptoms alone.
