Excessive Daytime Sleepiness Evaluation

Persistent difficulty staying awake is a safety symptom—not simply laziness. Causes range from insufficient sleep and medication effects to sleep apnea and other medical or sleep disorders.

Unrefreshed person with daytime sleepiness

Common contributors

Not enough sleep

Work, caregiving, irregular schedules and delayed bedtimes commonly produce chronic sleep restriction.

Fragmented sleep

Sleep apnea, pain, reflux, movement disorders, insomnia and environmental disturbance can reduce restorative sleep.

Medical or medication effects

Sedatives, some psychiatric drugs, alcohol, neurologic disease and metabolic disorders may contribute.

Driving safety

Do not drive or operate dangerous equipment when struggling to stay awake. Arrange safe transportation and seek prompt clinical advice. Sudden weakness, loss of consciousness or other acute neurologic symptoms require urgent evaluation.

Testing depends on the history and may include sleep apnea testing, sleep logs or specialist evaluation rather than a single universal test.

How W8MD can help
