Injection and Infusion Safety

Intramuscular and intravenous services are medical procedures. Sterile sourcing, correct identity and concentration, patient selection, administration technique and response planning are essential.

Medical safety review before injection or infusion

Before treatment

  • Confirm goals, allergies, conditions, pregnancy status and medication list.
  • Review kidney, liver, heart and fluid-balance risks as appropriate.
  • Identify previous infusion or injection reactions.
  • Confirm the exact product, concentration, dose and route.

During and after treatment

Staff monitor for pain, infiltration, bleeding, dizziness, allergy or other reactions. Patients receive instructions about expected symptoms and when to seek urgent care.

Injectable products can pose serious harm if contaminated because they bypass many natural defenses. Read FDA sterile-compounding safety information.

Safety and evidence

Seek urgent care for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, fainting, severe chest pain, new neurologic symptoms or rapidly worsening redness, swelling, fever or pain. IV therapy also carries vascular, fluid and electrolyte risks.

How W8MD can help

W8MD reviews the reason for treatment, health history, medications, allergies, diet, relevant laboratory information, route, formulation, evidence, alternatives and cost. The plan is individualized rather than based on a universal “cocktail.”
