Here is a study that quantifies the risk of diabetes that comes from drinking sugar sweetened soda.
For the first time, researchers were able to put a number to the risk of diabetes that comes from drinking soda.
The researchers found that drinking one (or one extra)* 12oz serving size of sugar-sweetened soft drink a day can be enough to increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 22%, a new study suggests. The research is published in Diabetologia (the journal of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes) and comes from data in the InterAct consortium.
Coca Cola’s Obesity Advertisement
Can you believe coca cola finally admitting that their products serve no nutritional purpose and they cause insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and even cancer?
The advertisement goes on to say “If you want to live healthy, you should not be drinking any of our products”.
They admit their role in the rising obesity epidemic and say their soft drinks / beverages serve “no nutritional purpose”.
This is one of the most honest advertisements you would see!
What truly causes the cravings for Soda and other soft drinks?
According to Dr. Prab R. Tumpati, MD, founder of W8MD medical weight loss centers of America, the soft drinks are very high in glycemic index – a measure of how much sugar a particular food group has and how fast it comes in to the blood. Since the normal way of obtaining starch for the body is via foods that have starch mixed with fiber that slows the absorption of the sugar leading to a lower glycemic index for foods such as fiber vegetables, salads etc. These types of starches that are mixed with fiber are called complex carbohydrates.
However, since the soft drinks have almost no fiber, all of the sugar is in the simple form called simple sugars. That means, there is nothing to be digested, the sugar comes right in to the blood stream very quickly! This gives rise to a quick response on the part of the body to produce high amounts of insulin in order to use all this sudden surge in sugar called sugar rush.
Although this “sugar rush” initially makes one feel good, after a little while, the sugar crash begins when the sugar starts to bottom out due to the effect of all that insulin that was produced – this process is called sugar crash! It is believed that this process of sugar rush and crash might lead to insulin resistance, and increased risk of diabetes.
